"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." John 1:1(ESV)
Fake News ba ang Gospel of John?
Ano ba talaga yung "The Word" (Logos)? Idea lang ba 'yan?
- Jehovah's Witnesses: Sabi nila, si Archangel Michael daw 'to na na-create bago gawin ang physical world.
- Latter-day Saints (Mormons): Spirit brother daw natin si Jesus sa heaven, literal na anak ng Heavenly Parents natin bago maging human.
- Oneness Pentecostals & Unitarians: Para sa kanila, the Word is just God's "plan" or "wisdom" (parang blueprint) hindi daw totoong Person yung Logos.
The Word is Eternal (Walang Simula)
"In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth."Genesis 1:1(ESV)
"All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made." John 1:3(ESV)
Sabi ng mga JWs, physical world lang daw ang ginawa ni Jesus, kaya baka anghel siya na unang na-create. Pero wait, if we cross-reference that with Colossians 1:16, it says all things, visible and invisible (including thrones, dominions, and angels), were created through Him! So, hindi pwedeng angelic being si Jesus. He is the Creator.
"For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities, all things were created through him and for him." Colossians 1:16(ESV)
Phrase 1: "In the beginning was the Word" (En archē ēn ho logos)
The Grammar: Pansinin niyo yung word na ēn (was). Sa Greek, imperfect tense ito. It describes continuous existence in the past. Hindi ginamit ni John yung word na egeneto (came into being or was created).
The Point: Bago pa man nag-start ang creation, the Word was already existing. Wala Siyang simula. Hindi Siya anghel na ginawa lang ng Diyos. This perfectly establishes His eternal nature.
The Word is a Divine Person
- Verse 12: Says we need to "believe in his name." You can't put your faith in the name of an abstract idea or a blueprint. Persona 'yan!
- Verses 9-10: Jesus is the "true light" coming into the world. May nag-argue pa na yung Greek word daw para sa "light" (phos) is neuter (walang gender), kaya baka daw hindi tao. Bro, grammatical gender lang 'yan! Yung word din para sa "child" (paidion) is neuter, pero hindi ibig sabihin object yung baby Jesus.
- This True Light shines on everyone (v. 9). Ito yung maganda sa grasya ng Diyos. He doesn't just pick a few people to save and leave the rest in the dark. His prevenient grace shines on everyone, reaching out so that whosoever freely responds and believes can become children of God.
Phrase 2: "And the Word was with God" (kai ho logos ēn pros ton theon)
The Grammar: The key word here is pros (with). It doesn't just mean "kasama" in a passive way; sa Greek context na ito, it means "face-to-face" or pointing towards someone in an active, intimate relationship.
The Point: You can't be "with" yourself. Kung ang Ama at ang Anak ay iisang persona lang na nagpapalit-palit lang ng maskara (like what Oneness Pentecostals believe), this verse wouldn't make sense. The Word (Jesus) is a completely distinct Person from God the Father. Magkahiwalay silang mga persona na may malalim na relationship.
"The Word was WITH God"
- Look at verse 2: "He was in the beginning with God." John uses the pronoun houtos ("this one"). He's emphatically pointing to a specific Person! Mamaya sa John 13:3, makikita natin ulit yung same pattern: Jesus knew He came from God and was going back to God (pros ton theon). He was literally in the presence of the Father from eternity past.
Phrase 3: "And the Word was God" (kai theos ēn ho logos)
The Grammar: Dito madalas umatake yung mga Jehovah's Witnesses. Sinasabi nila, walang definite article ("the") yung word na theos (God) dito, kaya dapat daw ang translation ay "the Word was a god." Pero in Greek grammar, kapag ang isang noun ay walang article (anarthrous) at nauuna sa verb (tulad ng theos ēn), it heavily emphasizes the nature, essence, or character of the subject. Scholars call this Colwell's Rule.
The Point: Hindi sinasabi ni John na ang Word ay isang diyos (like a lesser, created being). At hindi rin niya sinasabi na ang Word ay ang Ama mismo (kasi nga He was with God). Sinasabi niya na kung ano ang divine nature ng Diyos Ama, ganoon din ang nature ng Word. He possesses the exact same uncreated, divine essence.
- Why this proves the Trinity: The Trinity teaches One God (one shared divine essence) in Three Distinct Persons. John 1:1 beautifully captures this profound tension in a single sentence:
He is eternal, not created (Phrase 1).
He is a distinct Person from the Father (Phrase 2).
He shares the exact same divine nature as the Father (Phrase 3).
Kaya kapag may nagtanong sa'yo kung imbento lang ba ang Trinity, you can confidently take them to the very first verse of John. The Word didn't just point us to God; the Word was God.

Nice explain Sir Ronald Obidos
