When discussing faith, sometimes we encounter the argument that we shouldn't just read the Bible on our own. Some claim that Jesus established a single, highly institutionalized visible Church with the exclusive authority to interpret Scripture, rather than allowing believers to be guided by the Holy Spirit individually.
Let’s break down this argument point by point. We'll look at what the Bible actually says and how we can apply it to our faith today!
Q1: Did Jesus build just one visible institution in Matthew 16:18?
Answer:
Totoo naman that Jesus prayed for unity and established one Church. But under the New Covenant, we need to understand what "Church" (Ekklesia) really means!
When Jesus declared, "I will build My Church" in Matthew 16:18, He was not setting up a visible church institution or a political headquarters in Rome or any specific city. What Christ built is the universal people of God, often referred to in theology as the invisible church, his "one body".
"And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent." Colossians 1:18(ESV)
"And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent." Colossians 1:18(ESV)
Sino ba ang bumubuo nito? It is composed of all born-again believers who are saved by grace, no matter where they are in the world. This Church is not bounded, restricted, or limited by any specific denomination or human institution. Tinawag itong "invisible church" because only God can truly see the hearts of those who genuinely belong to Him. Sa culture natin, sanay tayo na ang pagiging miyembro ay nakabase sa physical ID cards o SEC-registered religious groups. Pero the true Church operates more like the ultimate Filipino bayanihan, a spiritually united family bound by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, not by a single human corporation.
"For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, Jews or Greeks, slaves or free, and all were made to drink of one Spirit." 1 Corinthians 12:13(ESV)
"For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, Jews or Greeks, slaves or free, and all were made to drink of one Spirit." 1 Corinthians 12:13(ESV)
Regarding Luke 10:16 (“He who hears you hears Me”), context is key! If you read the whole chapter, Jesus wasn't just talking to the 12 Apostles to set up an exclusive, infallible hierarchy. He was sending out the 72 ordinary disciples to preach the Gospel! The authority wasn't in an institutional title; the authority was in the Gospel message they carried.
At sa Matthew 18:17 ("tell it to the Church"), Jesus is teaching us how to handle conflicts inside our local congregations. He’s talking about church discipline within your local community of believers, not appealing to a global infallible hierarchy to settle a dispute between two neighbors.
Q2: Is the Church higher than the Bible since it existed first?
Answer:
Imagine it like this: Ang nanay ba ang nagbigay ng identity sa anak niya dahil kumuha siya ng birth certificate sa PSA? Hindi. She just recognized and documented what was already true.
The Early Church didn't create or authorize the New Testament; they simply recognized the writings that were already inspired by God. Oo, the visible gatherings of the Church existed before the NT books were finished, but what was the Early Church built upon? Ephesians 2:20 says it was built “on the foundation of the apostles and prophets.”
"So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone." Ephesians 2:19-20(ESV)
"So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone." Ephesians 2:19-20(ESV)
Before the NT was written, believers relied on the spoken teachings of the Apostles. Pero alam natin na in human history, ang oral tradition puwedeng maging parang game ng "Telephone" or tsismis, nag-iiba ang kwento over time. That is exactly why the Apostles wrote their teachings down! God wanted a permanent, unchanging "resibo" (receipt) of the New Covenant. The Bible is the exact apostolic teaching preserved for us. The Church is a servant of the Word, not the master of it.
Q3: Does the Bible forbid personal interpretation?
Answer:
Let's do a quick context check!
First, basahin natin ang buong thought ng 2 Peter 1:20-21. It says that no prophecy came from someone's own interpretation or human will, "but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit"
"Knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone’s own interpretation. For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit." 2 Peter 1:20-21(ESV)
Apostle Peter is talking about the origin of the Scriptures (how the prophets received it from God), hindi yung kung paano natin babasahin ang Bible ngayon! He is assuring us that the Bible isn't made up of human opinions.

Second, sa 1 Timothy 3:15, Paul calls the Church the "pillar and foundation of the truth." Ano ba ang trabaho ng poste (pillar) sa bahay? The pillar holds up the roof; it is not the roof itself. The Church’s job is to hold up, defend, and proclaim the Truth (which is Jesus and His Word). The Church is the defender of truth, but God's Word is the source of truth.
Q4: Who has the final authority to interpret Scripture?
Answer:
Actually, God expects every believer in the invisible church to know the Word and test what they hear!
Sa society natin, minsan nasanay tayo na mag-"amen" na lang nang nakapikit sa mga nasa posisyon. But look at the Bereans in Acts 17:11.
"Now these Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica; they received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so." Acts 17:11(ESV)
Apostle Paul (an actual Apostle!) preached to them. Did they just blindly accept his authority? No! They examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.

Did Paul get offended and say, "How dare you use private interpretation! I am an Apostle!" Hindi! The Bible actually praised them for having a "noble character."
God does not want us to be isolated lone wolves. We believe that the Holy Spirit is still fully active today in the universal body of believers, giving us spiritual gifts, wisdom, and teachers to guide us. We interpret the Bible within our church communities and respect historical wisdom. But the final, ultimate authority, the Ultimate Resibo, is always Scripture. Kung ang turo ng institusyon ay iba sa Bible, we follow the Bible.
Q5: Are you following the true Church or a human invention?
Answer:
The true continuous line from the 1st century until today isn't traced through a lineage of physical leaders in a specific building. It is traced through the continuity of the Gospel message lived out by the invisible church.
Kung ikaw ay born-again, saved by grace, at ang pinaniniwalaan mo ay naka-align sa isinulat ng mga Apostles sa New Testament, then you belong to the very same Church that Jesus established in Matthew 16. Human traditions and institutional rules can drift away over centuries, which is why we must always anchor ourselves back to the Bible.
Don't be afraid to open your Bible, pray for the Holy Spirit's guidance, and read. God wrote it for you to understand!
