"Pagsusuri sa Hebrews 6 at 10: Biblical nga ba ang "Once Saved, Always Saved"?"

"It is impossible for those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, who have shared in the Holy Spirit, who have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the coming age,   and who have fallen away, to be brought back to repentance. To their loss, they are crucifying the Son of God all over again and subjecting him to public disgrace." Hebrews 6:4-6(NIV)

"If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left, but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God. Anyone who rejected the law of Moses died without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. How much more severely do you think someone deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified them, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace?" Hebrews 10:26-29(NIV)

Let’s get real.

Are these just hypothetical warnings para takutin ang mga "fake" Christians? Or are they genuine, real-time warnings para sa ating lahat?

Let’s dive deep into the Word through this Q&A.

The warning wasn’t about merely struggling with everyday sin (like getting angry, failing a test of patience, or slipping up). The warning was about a total, deliberate, public turning away from Christ. They were literally considering "crucifying Christ all over again" by abandoning the New Covenant and returning to the shadows of animal sacrifices.

"And this washing is called enlightenment (phōtismos), because those who learn these things are enlightened in their understandings." (Justin Martyr, First Apology, Chapter 61)

"Baptism is the brightest and most magnificent of all the gifts of God... We call it the gift, the grace, the baptism, the anointing, the illumination (phōtismos), the clothing of immortality, the laver of regeneration, the seal, and everything that is honorable." (Gregory of Nazianzus, Oration 40: On Holy Baptism, Section 3)

"Even now the fragrance of blessedness is upon you, O ye who are soon to be enlightened (photizomenoi)... ye are already within the nets of the Church, being taken for Christ." (Cyril of Jerusalem, Procatechesis, Section 1)

Hindi natin kailangang lumayo. The author of Hebrews actually uses the exact same word (phōtisthentes) in another chapter to describe the genuine, undeniable conversion experience of his readers.
"But recall the former days when, after you were enlightened (phōtisthentes), you endured a hard struggle with sufferings," Hebrews 10:32(ESV)

Kapag ginamit ng author ang salitang ito sa Hebrews 6:4, he is talking about the exact same genuine experience.

  • "Shared in the Holy Spirit" (metochos): Ito yung mismong word na ginamit din sa Hebrews 3:14 para sa mga genuine believers: "We have come to share (metochos) in Christ, if indeed we hold our original conviction firmly to the very end." Hebrews 3:14(NIV)

"Therefore, holy brothers and sisters, who share (metochos) in the heavenly calling, fix your thoughts on Jesus, whom we acknowledge as our apostle and high priest." Hebrews 3:1(NIV)

There is no question that this refers to completely saved, genuine Christians.

"If you are left without discipline, in which all have participated (metochos), then you are illegitimate children and not sons." Hebrews 12:8(ESV)

They were true partners in the Holy Spirit, which makes the warning of falling away a genuine reality, not a hypothetical scare tactic.

  • "Tasted the heavenly gift": If you "taste" something in this biblical context, it's a profound, real experience.

"But we do see Jesus, who was made lower than the angels for a little while, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might taste
(geusētaideath for everyone." Hebrews 2:9(NIV)

Jesus fully, completely, and agonizingly experienced the reality of death on the cross. Wala Siyang naiwang hindi naranasan sa kamatayan. Kung ang pag-"taste" ng death ni Jesus ay isang buong karanasan, by the author's exact same logic, ang pag-"taste" ng heavenly gift sa Hebrews 6 ay nangangahulugang fully and genuinely experiencing God's saving grace.

Isa pa, ang phrase na "to restore them again to repentance" ay napakalinaw. Therefore, their first approach to God was a genuine response to grace, making their apostasy a real tragedy, not a hypothetical thought experiment.

Q: Paano yung Hebrews 10:26–29? Sabi doon "sanctified" sila.

A: That’s exactly the point of the warning. Basahin natin ang verse 29:

"How much more severely do you think someone deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified them, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace?" Hebrews 10:29(NIV)

The person who falls away was actually set apart (sanctified) by the blood of Christ. It is explicitly for those who are inside the Covenant.

A: Definitely not.
  • Assurance is Real: Kung ikaw ay nagtitiwala kay Kristo, patuloy na lumalakad sa Spirit, at nagpe-persevere in faith, you have every biblical reason to be assured.
The warnings are the actual means God uses to keep us close to Him.

  • High Priestly Intercession: Hebrews 7:25 says He lives to make intercession for us. Hangga’t lumalapit ka sa Kanya, you are totally safe.

Real Talk Reflection

Verse: Hebrews 3:14

"For we have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end."

Don't harden your heart. Keep your eyes on Jesus, the High Priest who perfectly intercedes for you under the New Covenant. Let's hold fast and finish the race together. Amen?
