Minsan ba naisip mo, “Bakit hindi nagkasala si Jesus? Dahil ba nag-try lang Siyang maigi? Paano kung bumigay Siya sa temptation?”
In this apologetics study, we’re going to tackle a super important question about the nature of Christ. Many young believers assume that Jesus was just like us, fighting off sin with a really good habit of reading the Bible and praying. But if we dig into what the Bible actually says, sobrang mas malalim at mas solid ang dahilan kung bakit Siya sinless!
Let's do some real talk. Did you know that a lot of alternative beliefs and cults actually teach that Jesus could have sinned?
The "Teleserye" View of Jesus' Temptation
Many groups believe that when Jesus was on earth, the fate of the universe was hanging by a thread, parang suspense na climax ng isang teleserye. They argue that if Jesus couldn't sin, then His temptations weren't "real." Here is a quick breakdown of what some of these groups teach versus what the Bible actually says:
| Belief System | What They Teach About Christ's Sinlessness |
| Jehovah’s Witnesses | Jesus was just a perfect human (like Adam). He could have failed and sinned, and the whole human race hung in the balance. |
| LDS (Mormonism) | Jesus was capable of sinning. The whole plan of salvation could have been foiled if He gave in to Satan. |
| Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) | Temptation and the possibility of sinning were very real to Christ. They teach that He took on human nature with all its liabilities, and that if He had sinned, it could have caused the breakup of the Godhead and sent the universe into cosmic chaos. |
| Word of Faith Movement | Jesus overcame only as a mortal man. If Satan overpowered Him, the devil would have won the universe. |
| Orthodox Christianity | Jesus was impeccable (He could not sin) because He is the divine Son of God incarnate, yet His temptations were 100% genuine. |
These alternative views make it sound like Christ's war against temptation was a nail-biting, uncertain event. But biblically? The outcome was never in doubt. God's redemptive plan was set "before the foundation of the world" (Ephesians 1:4-10). Walang "Plan B" ang Diyos. It was always absolutely certain that Jesus would live a perfectly holy life.
The Big Word: "Impeccability" (Able Not to Sin vs. Not Able to Sin)
To understand this, we need to learn a cool apologetics term: Impeccability.
- Sinlessness means Jesus did not sin.
- Impeccability means Jesus could not sin.
The biggest objection people throw at us is this: "Kung hindi pala Siya pwedeng magkasala, eh di fake ang temptation Niya! Bakit pa Siya tinukso ni Satanas?"
Here is where we need to be sharp. Nearly 300 years ago, a brilliant theologian named Jonathan Edwards made a game-changing distinction between Natural Ability and Moral Ability.
- Natural Ability: Having the physical means, motive, and opportunity to do something.
- Moral Ability: Having the inner desire, inclination, or willingness to do it.
Let’s Filipinize this to make it clear:
Imagine a loving Pinay mother taking care of her newborn baby. Does she have the natural ability to harm her child? Yes. She has hands, there are sharp knives in the kitchen, and she has the opportunity. But does she have the moral ability to do it? ABSOLUTELY NOT. Her heart is so full of love for her baby that it is morally impossible for her to even want to do it.
Gets ba? When Jesus was in the wilderness, He was starving (motive). There were stones (opportunity). He had divine power (means). So, naturally speaking, the temptation was real! He felt the extreme hunger. But morally? Jesus had absolutely ZERO inclination or inner bent to rebel against God the Father. He was tempted as we are, but without the sinful nature that makes us want to say "yes" to sin.
What is the True Secret to His Perfection?
Some groups (like some extreme Word of Faith teachers) claim, "Kaya lang naman nanalo si Jesus kasi puno Siya ng Holy Spirit. Kung punuin din natin ang sarili natin ng Holy Spirit, kaya rin nating maging sinless!"
Wait lang. Let’s think about that logically. Millions of true Christians throughout history have been filled with the Holy Spirit, but none of us have become completely sinless (1 John 1:8-10). The Holy Spirit was definitely with Jesus, but that’s not the only reason He was perfect.
Jesus was morally perfect because of WHO He is, the divine Word made flesh!
Look at this amazing connection between the Old and New Testaments:
- In Exodus 34:6, God reveals His glory to Moses, describing Himself as "abounding in love and faithfulness."
"And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, “The LORD, the LORD, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness." Exodus 34:6(NIV)
- In John 1:14, the apostle John writes that the Word became flesh and tabernacled among us, and we have seen His glory... "full of grace and truth."
"The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth." John 1:14(NIV)
Jesus didn’t just borrow God’s power; He is God. His moral character is the exact same glorious character of Yahweh revealed in the Old Testament. In John 5:19, Jesus says the Son cannot do anything of His own accord, but only what He sees the Father doing. Because He is the exact image of the Father, He literally cannot act out of character.
"Jesus gave them this answer: “Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does." John 5:19(NIV)
"Jesus gave them this answer: “Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does." John 5:19(NIV)
"Pero unfair naman ata 'yun?"
Some young people ask, "Kung Diyos pala Siya, unfair 'yan kay Satanas! Mandaya pala si Jesus kasi automatic win Siya."
This assumes that for a test to be fair, the devil needs an equal 50/50 chance of destroying the universe. But Jesus didn't come to play a fair game with the devil; He came to crush the serpent's head! The emotional distress, the literal blood, sweat, and tears in Gethsemane, and the horrific pain of the cross were painfully real.
C.S. Lewis perfectly drops the mic on this issue:
"I have heard some people complain that if Jesus was God as well as man, then His sufferings and death lose all value in their eyes, 'because it must have been so easy for Him.' ... The perfect submission, the perfect suffering, the perfect death were not only easier for Jesus because He was God, but were possible only because He was God."
Jesus didn't experience temptation and suffering to show us, "Hey, you can be sinless too if you try hard enough!" He did it to be our perfect, unblemished Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. He conquered sin not just as a really disciplined guy, but as the unbreakable, impeccable Lord of Glory stepping into our messy world to save us completely.
Real Talk Reflection
"For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are, yet he did not sin." Hebrews 4:15(NIV)
Call to Action: Whenever you face matinding temptations today, don’t just try to fight it alone or rely on your own willpower. Look to Jesus, our perfect, infallible Savior. Run to His throne of grace with confidence, knowing He has already secured the victory for you!
