Some people say He was just a great prophet. Others claim He was an ordinary man who got "upgraded" to sonship later in life. Groups like Jehovah’s Witnesses or Mormons bring their own unique twists, while secular critics try to brush the title off as ancient Greek folklore.
So, what’s the real deal? Was Jesus actually the Son of God? What does that even mean for us today, especially in our Pinoy context? Let’s dive into a real-talk, Bible-first Q&A to break down the tough questions!
Q1: Muslims say God can't have a Son because God doesn't have a wife. Do Christians believe God literally fathered Jesus physically?
Short Answer: Absolute hindi (no)! That is a complete misunderstanding of Christian theology.
Muslim critics often point to Qur'anic verses (like Surah 4:171 or 6:101) that ask, "How can He have a son when He has no consort?" They assume Christians believe God had physical, carnal relations with Mary to produce a child.
- The Reality: Authentic Christianity has never taught this. God is Spirit; He does not have a physical body to procreate like human beings do.
- The Meaning of "Son": When the Bible calls Jesus the "Son of God," it is using relational language to express identity, divine nature, and unique intimacy, not a biological process.
- The Analogy: Just as an earthly son shares the exact human nature of his father, Jesus shares the exact divine nature of the Father. He is uncreated and eternally divine.
Critics sometimes claim the Bible was altered to force this title onto Jesus. But textual evidence completely demolishes that idea. The New Testament contains over 260 references to God as "Father" and 128 direct references to Jesus as the "Son." These references are deeply embedded across hundreds of ancient manuscripts with overwhelming consistency.
Q2: What about Mormons (LDS)? Don't they believe Jesus is the Son of God?
Short Answer: They use the same words, but they mean something totally different.
Mormon theology teaches a very literal interpretation that falls far outside historical, biblical Christianity. According to LDS official teachings:
- Jesus is the "literal spirit child" of Heavenly Father (Elohim) and a Heavenly Mother, making Him the older brother of all humans and angels (including Lucifer).
- Jesus is the "Only Begotten in the flesh," which many LDS leaders historically taught meant God the Father physically fathered Jesus’ mortal body through Mary.
What the Bible Actually Teaches:
- Colossians 1:15–17: When Paul calls Jesus the "firstborn over all creation," he isn't saying Jesus was the first spirit baby created in heaven! In ancient Jewish culture, "firstborn" (prototokos) was a title of supreme rank, authority, and inheritance—not creation order (see Psalm 89:27).
- Hebrews 1:2–3: Jesus is the Creator of all ages and things. Angels are never called "sons" in the unique, eternal sense that Jesus is.
- The Term Monogenēs (John 3:16): Often translated "only begotten," this Greek term literally highlights Jesus as unique, one-of-a-kind, and unparalleled. Jesus was already the divine Son in heaven before He was ever sent into the world (1 John 4:9).
Q3: Did Jesus become the Son of God at His baptism or resurrection, like some progressive scholars claim?
Short Answer: Nope! Jesus didn't "evolve" into the Son of God; He has always been the eternal Son.
Some modern critical scholars and "progressive" thinkers claim early Christians slowly "promoted" Jesus over time, first believing He became God's Son at His resurrection, then pushing it back to His baptism, then to His birth, and finally to eternity past.
Why this theory fails under real biblical scrutiny:
- The Baptism (Mark 1:11): When the heavenly voice says, "You are my beloved Son," God is affirming an existing relationship, not adopting a stranger! The language points straight back to Genesis 22 (Isaac, the beloved son). Isaac was already Abraham's son before Abraham offered him; Jesus was already the Son before His public ministry began.
- The Sanhedrin Trial (Mark 14:61–62): The Jewish leaders didn't condemn Jesus to death for claiming to have a "special spiritual connection" with God. They condemned Him for blasphemy because claiming to be the unique Son of God was an explicit claim to divine equality!
- The Resurrected Lord (Romans 1:3–4): Paul writes that Jesus was declared the Son of God in power through the resurrection. His resurrection didn't make Him the Son for the first time; it publicly declared His royal, messianic authority over all creation!
Q4: Are Oneness Pentecostals right when they say Jesus is actually God the Father Himself?
Short Answer: No. Jesus is truly God, but He is not God the Father.
Oneness Pentecostalism claims there is only one Person in the Godhead who manifests in different roles: first as Father, then as Son, then as the Holy Spirit.
The Biblical Contrast:
The New Testament clearly distinguishes the Person of the Father from the Person of the Son.

In our Filipino culture, close family ties, debts of gratitude, and respect for authority are a huge part of life. Here is why understanding Jesus as the true Son hits home for us:
- Real Access, Zero Intimidation: Traditional folk beliefs often paint God as a fierce, distant boss who is impossible to approach without going through middlemen. But because Jesus is the eternal Son, He shows us God as Abba, a loving, close-up Father! Through faith in the Son, we aren't just treated like hired help; we are fully adopted into God's own family (Galatians 4:4–6).
- True Salvation Beats Utang na Loob: We are so used to feeling like we have to constantly work hard to earn approval or pay back favors. But salvation isn't a debt we grind to pay off. The Father sent His Son as a pure gift, meaning our standing with God is totally secured by what Jesus finished on the cross!
- Zero Fear of the Unseen: A lot of folks still deal with worries about ancestral spirits, curses, or things like kulam or bad luck. Realizing that Jesus is the uncreated Son who created every single power, throne, and invisible ruler gives us total peace of mind (Colossians 1:16). He has the final say over every spiritual realm!
The Bottom Line
Jesus isn't a created spirit baby, a lesser god, a temporary role, or a mere human teacher who got elevated by His followers. He is the eternal, uncreated Son of God who entered human history to rescue us.
When we place our trust in Him, we don't just learn about God; we are brought into a personal, eternal relationship with the Father through the power of the Spirit!
