"Why did John a great apostle who walked with Jesus and knew the Scriptures, still make this mistake, and not just once but twice?"

Looking at the context of Revelation and the nature of apocalyptic visions, here are some key reasons:

1. Overwhelmed by the Vision

John was “in the Spirit” (Rev. 1:10) when he received intense visions of the end times, the New Jerusalem, and the victory of God’s Kingdom.

• Emotional flood: Hearing about the Marriage Supper of the Lamb (Rev. 19) and seeing the beauty of the New Jerusalem (Rev. 22) filled him with joy, fear, and awe all at once.

• Instinctive reaction: In the ancient world, bowing down (proskynesis) wasn’t only worship of God, it was also a way to show deep respect to kings or messengers. In that overwhelming moment, John’s emotions carried him.

2. Did He Confuse the Angel with God?

It’s not that John forgot God’s command (Matt. 4:10; Deut. 6:13). But angels reflect God’s glory so strongly that in the rush of the vision, it’s easy to mistake the messenger for the Sender.

• Second time (Rev. 22:8–9): Even after being corrected in chapter 19, John bowed again near the end of the vision. This shows just how overwhelming the experience was, gratitude and awe pushed him to honor the messenger, even though worship belongs only to God.

3. Why Record This Twice in Scripture?

John didn’t hide his mistake. Writing it down twice teaches us something important:

• Warning against angel-worship: In the first century, some false teachings encouraged worship of angels (Col. 2:18). John’s mistake, and the angel’s sharp correction, “Don’t do that! I’m a fellow servant… Worship God!” makes it crystal clear that only God deserves worship.

• Integrity of Scripture: Even the greatest apostle could stumble under intense emotion. But God’s Word remains pure, correcting us and pointing us back to Him.

John didn’t forget God’s command, he was simply swept up in the indescribable glory of the vision. The angel’s reminder stands as a timeless lesson: no matter how amazing the message or how glorious the messenger, worship belongs to God alone. Soli Deo Gloria.
