"The Universal Church of Christ vs. The Roman Institution!"

Today, hihimayin natin yung claim na ang Roman Catholic Church daw ay synonymous sa "original Church" just because kina-categorize nila ang iba't ibang rites (Latin, Maronite, Coptic, etc.) under one umbrella. Let’s look at this with a critical eye, guided by New Covenant truth.

Answer:

Isa itong perfect example ng Equivocation Fallacy. The argument tries to equate the Universal (Catholic) Church na nabanggit sa Bible, which is the body of all believers na united by the Holy Spirit sa Roman Institutional Church na pinamumunuan ng Pope.
  • The Error: Yes, ang RCC ay collection ng various rites, pero that structural diversity doesn't prove na sila ang the Church. Yung "One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church" sa Creeds ay nagre-refer sa Invisible Church (the sum of all true believers from every tribe and tongue) na naglagay ng faith nila kay Jesus Christ alone.

When you force a specific hierarchy (yung Pope at ang kanyang jurisdiction) sa definition ng "Catholic," masyado mong nililiitan yung definition ng Church to fit an institution.

Answer:

Isang malaking Red Herring ito. The history of the name (kung kailan at bakit na-add ang "Roman") is totally irrelevant sa theological validity ng claims ng institution na ito.
  • The Error: Whether na-popularize yung term nung 16th century o hindi, it doesn't change the central claim ng RCC: na ang Pope daw has supreme authority over the whole Church.

  • The Reality: Ang issue dito ay hindi yung pangalan; it’s the nature of the authority. Yung mga New Testament writers, including Peter himself (1 Peter 5:1), identified as "fellow elders," hindi bilang supreme pontiffs na may hawak ng "keys" para i-administer ang buong global church.

"So I exhort the elders among you, as a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as a partaker in the glory that is going to be revealed." 1 Peter 5:1(ESV)

Answer:

Fallacy of Composition and Misapplication of Scripture ito.
  • The Error: Kinukuha ng RCC ang mga verses na nagde-describe sa spiritual unity ng Body of Christ at ipinipilit na ang ibig sabihin nito ay organizational unity under the Roman hierarchy.

  • The Reality: Ang Ephesians 4:4 ("There is one body and one Spirit...") ay pinag-uusapan ang unity created by the Holy Spirit.

"There is one body and one Spirit just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call." Ephesians 4:4(ESV)

This unity exists among all believers who are born again, regardless kung nag-submit ba sila sa Pope or not. Sa John 10:16 ("...there shall be one flock and one shepherd"), explicitly na sinasabi kung sino ang Shepherd, si Jesus Christ, hindi ang Pope.

"And I have other sheep that are not of this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd." John 10:16(ESV)

To claim that na ang "one flock" requires the Pope is to replace the Shepherd with a human proxy, which is completely missing the intent of the text.

Summary of Logical Fallacies

  • Equivocation: Confusing the biblical, universal meaning of "Catholic" (all believers) sa specific, organizational meaning (The Roman Catholic Institution).

  • Begging the Question (Circular Reasoning): The argument assumes na ang RCC ang true Church to prove na all rites under it belong to the true Church.

Real Talk Reflection

"There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call; one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all..." (Ephesians 4:4-6)

The true Church is living, breathing, and scattered across the world. Your identity isn't in a Rite; it’s in the Redeemer.

Call to Action: Ask yourself today: Naka-base ba ang assurance of salvation mo sa pagiging kabilang sa isang human institution, o firmly anchored ito sa finished work ni Christ sa cross? If it's the latter, you are already part of the "One Body" na sinasabi sa Bible.

Mic Drop Cross-Examination for Roman Catholics:

#1) If the "One Flock" sa John 10:16 ay naka-define by submission sa Pope, does this mean na ang mga Apostles mismo na walang Pope at public pang nakipag-debate kay Peter ay outside of the "One Flock"?

#2) Kung ang "Roman Catholic" label ay isang description lang ng "Latin Rite," bakit dine-demand ng Church ang submission sa Pope as a requirement for salvation/membership, even from those na hindi naman nasa Latin Rite?

#3) Since tayo ay nasa ilalim na ng New Covenant, kung saan ang veil ng temple ay napunit na, bakit pa natin kailangan ng isang earthly, human mediator sa Rome para maka-access sa "One Body" kung malinaw sa Bible na we have direct access to the Father through the High Priest, Jesus Christ?
